When one shrink sleeve labeling machine needs to handle several bottle sizes, changing the mandrel is a normal part of the changeover. But in practice, ordering a new mandrel is not as simple as saying, “We have a new bottle, so we need a new center column.”

The mandrel has to work with the sleeve film, bottle shape, film thickness, machine speed, and feeding system. If the new product is significantly different from the existing one, the cutter plate and timing screw may also need to be changed.

So, what information should you give the shrink sleeve labeling machine manufacturer before ordering a new mandrel?

What Does the Mandrel Do?

The mandrel, also called a center column or sleeve former, is the part that supports and forms the flat sleeve film into a tube before the sleeve is cut and applied to the bottle.

During production, the sleeve slides over the outside of the mandrel. This means the size and surface of the mandrel directly affect how smoothly the film moves through the machine.

If the sleeve and mandrel are not properly matched, you may see problems such as unstable film feeding, film wrinkles, tearing, static, uneven cutting, or label positioning errors. The issue may not be caused by the mandrel alone, but by the combination of the sleeve, mandrel and machine settings.

1. Start With the Sleeve, Not Just the Bottle

One of the most important points when ordering a mandrel is the sleeve size.

The machine manufacturer will normally need to know:

  • Sleeve lay-flat width

  • Sleeve circumference

  • Sleeve height

  • Film thickness

  • Film material

  • Required sleeve length

The sleeve's internal perimeter needs to be slightly larger than the mandrel's external perimeter so that the film can move without excessive friction.

However, there is no single clearance that should be used for every application. Film elasticity, thickness, surface friction and machine speed all affect the required clearance. Some manufacturers may use a typical range as a starting point, but the final mandrel dimensions should be confirmed according to the actual machine and film.

This is why simply copying the diameter of an old mandrel is not always the right approach when the film specification has changed.

2. Provide the Bottle Dimensions and Shape

The bottle is just as important as the sleeve.

For a new product, provide the machine manufacturer with the bottle diameter, height, neck diameter and overall shape.

For a simple round bottle, these dimensions may be enough for an initial evaluation. But for a square, oval, tapered or irregular bottle, it is better to provide a product drawing or CAD file.

A drawing allows the manufacturer to see the complete bottle profile instead of trying to understand the shape from a few measurements.

If the bottle has a large change in diameter, a sloping shoulder or other unusual geometry, mention this when asking for the new changeover parts.

3. Tell the Manufacturer the Film Material and Thickness

“Shrink sleeve film” is not one single type of material.

Common materials include PETG, PVC, OPS and PLA, and they do not all behave the same way on a mandrel. Their stiffness, flexibility and surface friction can be different.

Film thickness also matters.

A very thin film has less stiffness and may be more difficult to push and guide through the forming system. At higher speeds, it can be more sensitive to friction and may buckle more easily if the feeding conditions are not suitable.

Therefore, when requesting a mandrel, don't just tell the manufacturer the sleeve width. Also provide the film material and thickness.

4. Pay Attention to the Mandrel Surface

The sleeve is constantly moving against the mandrel surface, so surface finish can affect feeding performance.

If the film has relatively high friction, the machine may need a lower-drag mandrel surface to keep the film moving smoothly, particularly at higher speeds.

Depending on the application, the manufacturer may choose an appropriate material, polishing method or surface treatment. The best option depends on the film and machine configuration rather than a universal specification.

This is another reason why a mandrel should be designed for the actual application rather than treated as a completely standard mechanical part.

5. Don't Forget the Sleeve Height

Sleeve height is another important parameter when changing products.

The manufacturer needs to know how much sleeve needs to be cut and applied to the bottle. If the new sleeve is significantly longer or shorter than the existing one, the cutting and feeding system should be checked.

For a new project, it is ideal to provide both the bottle drawing and sleeve drawing.

The sleeve drawing can show the label height, lay-flat width, printing direction, seam position and other details that may affect the application.

This is much more reliable than trying to describe the label only by saying “the sleeve is bigger” or “the label is taller.”

6. Bottle Shape Can Affect the Mandrel Design

Not every bottle can use the same type of mandrel.

Round bottles

Round bottles are usually the simplest application. A standard cylindrical or bullet-style mandrel may be suitable, depending on the sleeve and machine design.

Square and rectangular bottles

Square and rectangular bottles are more demanding because the sleeve has to be formed consistently around the container.

The sleeve's fold lines should also be considered. For printed sleeves, important graphics should not be placed directly on an unintended folding area because this can affect the appearance of the finished label.

Depending on the machine, a shaped mandrel or additional orientation control may be required.

Irregular or tapered bottles

For an unusual bottle shape, don't assume that a standard round mandrel will work.

Send the bottle drawing to the manufacturer and let the engineering team check the sleeve dimensions, bottle profile and available changeover structure together.

7. Does a New Product Always Need Only a New Mandrel?

Not necessarily.

If the old and new products are close in size and shape, changing the mandrel may be enough.

But if the product dimensions are significantly different, you should ask the manufacturer to check the complete changeover system.

Mandrel

The mandrel supports and forms the sleeve film before cutting and application.

Cutter Plate

The cutter is responsible for cutting the sleeve to the required length. A significant change in sleeve specifications may require a different cutter plate or cutting configuration.

Timing Screw

The timing screw separates and positions bottles before they enter the sleeving area. Its pocket diameter and pitch are related to the bottle size and shape.

For example, changing from a small-diameter bottle to a much larger bottle may require not only a different mandrel but also a different timing screw.

So, when there is a large product change, it is better to ask:

“Do we need a complete changeover set?”

rather than simply:

“Can you supply another mandrel?”

8. What Should You Send When Asking for a New Mandrel?

To make the quotation and technical confirmation easier, prepare the following information.

Bottle information

  • Bottle photo

  • Bottle diameter

  • Bottle height

  • Neck diameter

  • Bottle shape

  • Product drawing or CAD file

Sleeve information

  • Lay-flat width

  • Sleeve height

  • Sleeve circumference

  • Film material

  • Film thickness

  • Sleeve drawing, if available

Machine information

  • Machine model

  • Current mandrel dimensions

  • Current cutter information

  • Current timing screw information

  • Required production speed

If you already have a mandrel for another bottle size, sending photos and its dimensions can also help the manufacturer understand the existing machine configuration.

9. Questions to Ask Before Ordering

Before confirming the purchase, it is worth asking the machine manufacturer:

  • Is this mandrel suitable for our sleeve dimensions?

  • Is the film material and thickness suitable for the proposed design?

  • Can the existing cutter be reused?

  • Can the existing timing screw be reused?

  • Does the new bottle require a special mandrel?

  • Do we need a complete changeover set?

  • Can the proposed setup run at our required production speed?

These questions can prevent a common problem: receiving a mandrel that physically fits the machine but does not run well with the actual sleeve and bottle.

Conclusion

Choosing a mandrel for a shrink sleeve labeling machine is a matching process between the sleeve, bottle and machine.

Bottle diameter is only one part of the information required. Sleeve lay-flat width, sleeve height, film material, film thickness, bottle shape and production speed can all affect the result.

If you are adding a new bottle size, the safest approach is to provide the machine manufacturer with a bottle drawing and sleeve drawing whenever possible.

And if the new product is significantly different from the existing product, don't assume that replacing the mandrel will solve everything. The mandrel, cutter plate and timing screw should be checked together as a complete changeover system.

Taking a few minutes to provide the right information before ordering can save much more time later during machine testing and production.
