A labeling machine that frequently breaks labels can lead to machine downtime, label waste, and reduced production efficiency. This problem often occurs when using a new batch of labels, changing label materials, or adjusting the machine for a new product.

In most cases, label breakage is caused by three main factors: the label itself, the peel plate, and incorrect label tension. Below are the most common causes and practical solutions.

1. Problems with the Label Itself

The first thing to check is the quality of the label and backing paper.

Damaged or Cut Backing Paper

One common cause of label breakage is a partially cut or damaged backing paper. This usually happens during the label die-cutting process. If the cutting pressure is too high, the die-cutting knife may not only cut the label but also partially cut the backing paper.

A typical sign is that the broken edge looks clean and straight. By carefully checking the broken area, you may find visible cuts or weakened lines on the backing paper.

When the label passes through the rollers and peel plate, the damaged backing paper is subjected to continuous tension and may eventually break.

Solution: Check the label roll carefully. If the backing paper has been cut during label production, the best solution is to ask the label supplier to remake the labels with the correct die-cutting depth.

Incorrect Backing Paper Material

The backing paper must have sufficient tensile strength for automatic labeling.

For many automatic labeling applications, Glassine liner is commonly used because it provides good strength and stable performance during continuous feeding. If the backing paper is too weak, it may stretch or break, especially when the machine is running at high speed.

Solution: Before ordering labels, confirm that the label material and liner are suitable for automatic labeling and your required production speed. It is also recommended to test new labels before full production.

2. Problems with the Peel Plate

If the label itself is in good condition, the next area to inspect is the peel plate.

The peel plate is where the label separates from the backing paper. Because the backing paper changes direction sharply at this point, any sharp edge or alignment problem can cause damage.

Peel Plate Edge Is Too Sharp

During manufacturing, the peel plate edge may become too sharp or develop burrs. When the backing paper passes over this edge, it may be scratched or gradually cut. Under continuous tension, the backing paper can eventually break.

Solution: Inspect the peel plate carefully for sharp edges, burrs, or scratches. If necessary, lightly polish the edge to create a smoother transition. The goal is to remove sharp points without changing the original peeling angle.

Incorrect Peel Plate Alignment

If the peel plate is installed incorrectly or tilted, the backing paper may not be pulled evenly. One side may experience more tension than the other, increasing the risk of tearing and breaking.

Solution: Make sure the peel plate is correctly installed and aligned with the label path. The backing paper should run smoothly through the center without twisting or moving to one side.

3. Excessive Label Tension

The tension system is designed to keep the label moving smoothly and steadily. However, excessive tension is another major cause of label breakage.

If the brake force, tension mechanism, or label pressing force is too high, the backing paper will be under excessive pulling force. When combined with weak or damaged backing paper, it can easily break.

Solution: Gradually reduce the label tension by adjusting the brake mechanism or tension system. Make sure the label remains stable, but avoid applying unnecessary pulling force.

Do not reduce the tension too much, as insufficient tension may also cause unstable label dispensing and inaccurate labeling.

How to Quickly Troubleshoot Label Breakage

When your labeling machine keeps breaking labels, we recommend checking the following points in order:

Check the label quality → Inspect the backing paper → Check the peel plate edge → Check the peel plate alignment → Adjust the label tension → Test at low speed → Gradually increase the production speed.

Testing the machine at a lower speed first can help identify whether the problem is related to label quality or machine adjustment.

Conclusion

Frequent label breakage is usually caused by damaged backing paper, unsuitable label materials, a sharp or incorrectly aligned peel plate, or excessive label tension.

By checking these key areas step by step, most label breakage problems can be identified and solved efficiently. Using high-quality labels, maintaining correct machine alignment, and setting proper tension are essential for stable automatic labeling.
